History & Founding

Virginia’s Independent City, a small but significant entity, traces its origins to the late 19th century. Prince William County was officially established in 1731, named in honor of William, Duke of Cumberland, a prominent figure in British military history. The area that would become the city was initially farmland, primarily supporting agricultural pursuits. Manassas Park itself was born in 1970, carved out of the eastern portion of Prince William County. The name "Manassas Park" is a direct reference to the nearby Manassas battlefield, site of the First and Second Battles of Bull Run, pivotal events in the American Civil War. Interestingly, the creation of Manassas Park was spurred by a desire to provide municipal services – particularly water and sewer – to a rapidly growing residential area surrounding the Manassas Industrial Park, avoiding the limitations of county-level provision. This separation effectively created a city dedicated to supporting the industrial growth of the region.
