History & Founding

Established in 1853 from parts of Fulton and Rockdale counties, this Georgia county owes its name to Patrick Henry, the famed orator of the American Revolution. The selection reflected the prevalent sentiment of patriotism and a desire to honor a champion of liberty. Prior to European settlement, the area was inhabited by the Creek Indians. During the Civil War, the county served as a supply depot for Confederate forces, and a significant portion of its population actively participated in the conflict. An interesting anecdote from the county's past involves a local farmer, Silas McBee, who famously hid a valuable Confederate flag under a pile of hay, preserving it for future generations and contributing to a tangible link with the region’s heritage.
