History & Founding

Located in southwest Georgia, this county boasts a rich history interwoven with the state’s development. Established in 1825 from portions of Calhoun and Stewart counties, it was named in honor of Phineas Early, a distinguished general in the Georgia militia during the War of 1812. Early’s significant contributions to defending Georgia from British incursions earned him this enduring recognition. Prior to European settlement, the area was inhabited by the Creek Indians, and their presence profoundly shaped the landscape and early interactions with settlers. During the Civil War, Blakely, the county seat, was the site of a significant battle in 1864, a fierce clash that resulted in the town’s near-total destruction. Legend has it that a local woman, Mrs. Martha Jackson, famously rallied the townspeople to rebuild Blakely with remarkable speed after the battle, showcasing the community's resilience and determination.
