History & Founding

Nestled in the northwest corner of Colorado, this county was officially established in 1871, carved from parts of Jackson and Grand counties. Its name honors Sidney T. Routt, Colorado’s first lieutenant governor and a prominent figure in the state’s early political landscape. Routt championed statehood and served as acting governor before Colorado officially joined the Union. An interesting historical anecdote revolves around the initial county seat. After its creation, several towns vied for the honor, leading to a somewhat chaotic period of shifting locations before Steamboat Springs ultimately prevailed.
