History & Founding

Located in southeastern Tennessee, this county holds a unique place in American history and offers a blend of natural beauty and small-town charm. Established in 1807 from parts of Sequatchie and Hamilton counties, its name honors Rhea Spencer, a prominent early Tennessee politician and a U.S. Congressman from North Carolina. Spencer, a staunch Federalist, played a significant role in the early years of Tennessee’s statehood. The area had been previously inhabited by Cherokee Indians, and their displacement was a key factor in the county’s formation, a common narrative in Tennessee's westward expansion. The Scopes Trial, formally known as *The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes*, famously took place in Dayton, the county seat, in 1925, catapulting the small town into national and international spotlight and forever linking it to the debate surrounding evolution and religion.
