History & Founding

Located in southwest Iowa, this county holds a rich history and a strong sense of community. Established in 1851, it was carved from the unorganized territory of Iowa and named in honor of General John Page, a distinguished Revolutionary War hero and former Governor of Virginia. Early settlers, largely of European descent, were drawn to the fertile land and the promise of a new beginning. The county played a significant role in Iowa's westward expansion, serving as a hub for agricultural development and trade. An interesting anecdote from its early days recounts a brief, but spirited, dispute over the location of the county seat. Initially, the town of Benton was chosen, but after a contentious election and some strategic maneuvering, the seat was moved to Clarinda, which remains the county seat to this day.
