The city takes its name from Cyrus Brookings, one of the three Brookings brothers who were instrumental in the railroad’s expansion and the establishment of the South Dakota State University (now South Dakota State University). An interesting, lesser-known fact is that the original town site was actually located a short distance northeast of the present city center before being relocated to better accommodate the railroad infrastructure.
