History

Established in 1951, its origins are rooted in the post-war logging boom. The name "Brookings" pays homage to Quincy Brooks, a surveyor who explored the area in the 1850s, though he never actually settled there. For centuries prior to its founding, the area was inhabited by the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation, whose presence shaped the landscape and culture. Initial growth was slow, largely centered around the timber industry, but the construction of Highway 101 in the 1950s spurred development, attracting new residents and businesses. An interesting, little-known fact is that the original town plan included a dedicated area for a future railway line, anticipating further industrial growth, which never materialized. This planned railway corridor now serves as a recreational trail.
