Originally conceived as "Fairfield Bay Estates," the project was spearheaded by the flamboyant and ambitious developer, Bill Lane, founder of Holiday Inn. The name itself is a combination of the "fair fields" of his native Iowa and the "bay" formed by the expansive Greers Ferry Lake. Lane envisioned a luxury retreat attracting affluent visitors, and the initial construction included a stunning 18-hole golf course, a marina, and luxurious homes, all designed to blend seamlessly with the natural landscape. A little-known fact is that Lane initially intended to name the resort "Holiday Bay," but a trademark conflict forced him to choose the ultimately adopted "Fairfield Bay." While the initial grand ambitions experienced some financial challenges over the years, the community persevered, gradually evolving from a purely resort-focused endeavor to a more established and diverse town.
